For the past 10 years, WorkTogether has been solving complex hiring challenges for schools, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations. Whether it’s restructuring job descriptions to attract top talent, executing national executive searches, or scaling teams during times of transition, we’ve worked alongside our partners to make hiring more strategic, inclusive, and effective.
As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we’re reflecting on some of the challenges we’ve tackled and the impact of our work. These stories highlight how thoughtful hiring practices can transform organizations and set them up for long-term success.
Restructuring Job Descriptions to Attract the Right Talent
Redesign Schools: 30 Job Descriptions in 8 Weeks
Redesign Schools, a two-site charter network in East Baton Rouge, needed to update 30 unique job descriptions before the spring hiring season. The challenge wasn’t just about rewriting job postings, it was about making them more relevant, accurate, and compelling to the right candidates.
We overhauled each role description, from teacher’s aide to principal, ensuring they highlighted Redesign’s strongest value proposition: a benefits package worth 20% more than their biggest competitor. We also made sure to address candidate concerns upfront by clearly explaining their year-round school model, reducing late-stage dropouts in the hiring process. The result? A stronger applicant pool, a better response rate, and a hiring process that worked more efficiently for both Redesign and their candidates.
Finding the Right Leaders to Drive Missions Forward
DC Public Education Fund: A National Search for an Executive Director
The DC Public Education Fund plays a critical role in supporting DC Public Schools. When it was time to find a new Executive Director, their board needed a search process that would attract top talent while aligning with their deep-rooted partnerships in the community.
We led strategic conversations with the board, DCPS leadership, and former Ed Fund executives to develop a comprehensive candidate profile. By balancing both quality and efficiency in our process, we ensured a seamless experience for both board members and candidates. The search resulted in a strong hire and set a new standard for board-led hiring.
KIPP Capital: Building a Diverse Leadership Team
KIPP Capital needed a new Chief Operating Officer and made it clear that representation in leadership was a priority. Recruiting for senior roles in smaller cities can be a challenge, but we were committed to finding a high-caliber, racially diverse candidate pool.
To do this, we combined large-scale marketing with highly personalized headhunting, reaching out to over 400 candidates individually. We gathered demographic data at each stage of the selection process to ensure equity and transparency. In the end, KIPP Capital had a competitive, diverse slate of candidates and a new leader who aligned with their mission.
Scaling Teams During Critical Transitions
Breakthrough Public Schools: Four C-Level Hires in the Middle of the School Year
When Breakthrough Public Schools’ new CEO took over, they were faced with four vacant executive roles. The challenge wasn’t just filling these positions quickly, it was ensuring that new hires would complement each other and be ready to lead during a time of transition.
We worked closely with existing leaders to rescope the roles, craft new job descriptions, and design a thoughtful selection process. Rather than making isolated hiring decisions, we evaluated candidates based on how they would work together as a leadership team. The result was a group of leaders with complementary skills and shared vision, ready to move the organization forward.
Joule Growth Partners: Filling Two Urgent Roles at Once
Joule Growth Partners initially partnered with us to find a Senior Financial Consultant, but when an unexpected departure shook up their team, they suddenly needed to fill two leadership roles, fast.
We quickly pivoted, using a single talent pool to fill both positions without compromising on quality or fit. Because we had already built a deep understanding of JGP’s culture and needs, we were able to streamline the process and deliver two high-quality hires who could hit the ground running.
Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
NFBLME: Career Coaching for Black & Latino Male Educators
The National Fellowship for Black and Latino Male Educators is committed to increasing the number of Black and Latino men in senior education leadership roles. Our role was to provide targeted career coaching that would help their fellows step into principal, senior-level, and C-suite positions with confidence.
Through resume support, interview prep, and personal branding coaching, we’ve helped dozens of NFBLME fellows successfully transition into leadership roles. Every participant rated our coaching experience 5 out of 5 stars, reinforcing the impact of investing in career development for historically underrepresented leaders.
